Like most folk out there, I enjoy a good video game. I'm mainly a fan of the Halo series, and FIFA games. As noted in previous posts, I consider myself a relatively competitive guy. I test myself regularly in my personal life by upping the ante, whether it's at the gym and I'm increasing weights, or choosing to go down a harder ski run, or by picking a more difficult high ropes course. However, when playing FIFA, I ease back.
At work, or in home life, some days are harder than others. It's for these days why I have my FIFA difficulty setting at sem-pro (medium), and rarely I put it higher. Over the years, I've found that especially on these days, you need a win. Something that can boost confidence, and make a smile appear. By breaking up what can seem like regular small defeats or struggles, with confidence boosting, low-thought required video gaming, I have found that my overall of a day improves.
In our high paced, hyper competitive business environment, losses can be frequent. This is why I firmly believe that taking it easy on some aspects of life can be worthwhile. After I play in a cup final in FIFA and win 5-0, boy is that satisfying. After all, I'm not playing to be the best in the world, nor am I playing to best those around me. I'm playing to boost confidence.
The same happens for me when skiing. One time I fell several time on a black run, and in order to prove to myself that I'm not a loser and a joke of a skier, I went onto an easier blue run and absolutely crushed it. My confidence shot up, and I was able to cruise through black runs for the rest of the day. That easy confidence booster wasn't to prove my skills to anyone. It was get my mind back on track. I've found over the past 10 years or so that skiing can be a mind game. Having an 'I can do this' mindset, or a 'This isn't so bad', compared to a 'This week isn't my week' mindset can be the difference between no falls, or a day littered with them.
So friends, I urge you to put the video game difficulty down a notch. It could just make your day that much better and help prove to yourself that you can get through it.
